What I’m looking for in stories…
Categories
(each category is rated from 1 to 10)
Characters
How well did the author develop the characters? Are the characters easy to keep track of? Is it easy to invest in the characters?
Dialogue
(a) Does it make sense to the story? (b) Does the dialogue itself make sense? And (c) Does it mirror what people in real life would say?
Cinematography
Much like visuals, lighting, camera angle, camera movement, camera position, and special effects can make me think deeper about the movie.
Pace
Goes hand in hand with the plot. Does it flow?
Entertainment
Did it make you feel scared, sad, or happy? Was I entertained? Would I watch this again? Would I recommend this to anyone?
Commitment
How much did the crew and cast commit? Did anyone phone it in? Was there too much commitment, and people ended up over-acting?
Symbolism
Was there any symbolism? Did it work or not so much? Does the message conveyed help improve the quality of the movie?
Themes
Did they develop the themes well?
Visuals
Costume Design/Set Design/Makeup/Props: Are the costumes clever because they do the job of setting the characters apart, or because they serve a purpose?
The Point / Message
What is the point of the movie? Does it convey the message well? If so, how? If not, why?
This rating scale is my personal method of reviewing movies, series, shows, and limited series. To find other reviews on this blog, the archive has a search feature to find ratings for all shows I reviewed. For example, in the search window, type in the genre, e.g., “thriller”, to see everything rated in that genre. Or type the title of the show to find the review.
